An evening out in Brookline

Brookline is the kind of place that feels both laid-back and busy, with plenty to offer on a casual stroll. On evenings when we want to spend a few unhurried hours without planning a full night out, we head to Brookline. This is what an evening here usually looks like for us.

We almost always start on Beacon Street, which has a great mix of food and drink spots. Sometimes, we pick up a drink from Kyo Matcha to start the walk.

For a light treat, stop at Japonaise Bakery for their ‘Japanese meets French’ bakes—simple, well made, and especially charming for a Studio Ghibli fan.

One of Brookline’s understated strengths is how walkable it is. Sidewalks are wide, crossings are manageable, and the neighborhood feels genuinely stroller friendly.

From Beacon Street, it’s easy to wander past residential blocks, small storefronts, and leafy side streets. There are small parks and quiet open spaces that invite you to pause, sit for a moment, or let kids play before heading out again.

From there we head out to Coolidge Corner and onto Harvard street which has Brookline Booksmith, one of my favorite spots. It’s hard to walk out empty-handed—between new releases, staff picks, and beautifully curated finds, it’s an independent bookstore done right.

If there’s still room for a drink in hand, Maruichi Select comes to the rescue just a few doors down. Their Mango or Strawberry matcha latte (based on availability) is a frequent pickup, especially after I finish up a fitness class on Beacon Street.

If you are in the mood for a movie, the historic Coolidge Corner Theatre is right up the street, offering vintage theatre vibes and a thoughtful film lineup.

Dinner can go in a few easy directions:

  • Ganko Ittetsu , located inside Arcade building (my favorite for a bowl of spicy and flavor packed ramen)
  • Barcelona Wine Bar on Beacon Street (if you’re in the mood to share small plates and linger just a bit longer)
  • Ssaanjh on Beacon Street

Honestly, you cannot go wrong with trying any establishment in this area.

Brookline evenings don’t ask for much planning. Just show up, walk slowly, and let the evening unfold.
